Massey Energy issued the following statement in response to the charges brought against four miners at Aracoma for failure to conduct escapeway drills in 2005 and 2006: “Massey takes the requirement to conduct escapeway drills seriously and will monitor this situation closely.

Massey Energy Contractor Experiences Construction Fire |

Massey Energy announced that the replacement plant for the previously destroyed Bandmill processing plant was damaged by fire. A fire broke out at the Zigmond Processing plant in Logan County, W.Va. Zigmond Processing is the replacement plant for the Bandmill processing plant which was destroyed by fire on August 27, 2009. The company expects the loss will be covered by insurance.

Belt Failure Temporarily Idles Pattiki Mine |

Alliance Resource Partners announced its White County Coal subsidiary temporarily idled the Pattiki mine located near the city of Carmi in White County, Ill. Production operations were halted at approximately 7 p.m. May 13, 2010, following the failure of the vertical conveyor belt system used in conveying raw coal out of the Pattiki mine. There were no injuries associated with the event.

Officials Re-enter UBB Mine, Congress Hears Testimony |

Massey Energy announced it, along with officials from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and West Virginia Office of Miners Health Safety and Training, (OHMST) re-entered the Upper Big Branch (UBB) mine on June 8, 2010, to explore the initial entry areas of the mine. Air sample readings continue to indicate that conditions in the mine are stable. The results from this initial exercise will dictate when additional entries into the mine to determine the cause of the explosion can begin.
