NMA Files Suit Against EPA and Corps PDF Print E-mail

During mid-July, the National Mining Association (NMA) filed suit against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) for unlawfully obstructing permitting of coal mining operations in the Central Appalachian coal region and beyond jeopardizing thousands of jobs and a vital supply of fuel to meet the nation’s electric power needs.

Massey Energy Acquires Marmet Dock PDF Print E-mail

Massey Energy acquired the assets and permits of the Marmet Dock river barge loading facility from Kanawha River Terminals.  Located at mile post 69 on the Kanawha River near Marmet, W.Va., this strategic facility is convenient to Massey’s Route 3 operations, as well as its Inman, Black Castle and Republic resource groups. This active dock facility boasts state-of-the-art infrastructure and ground storage capacity of 300,000 tons.  The annual loading capacity of the facility, as currently configured, is in the range of 5 to 7 million tons.

Patriot Coal Closes Harris No. 1 Mine PDF Print E-mail

Patriot Coal’s Eastern Associated Coal subsidiary has terminated mining operations at the Harris No. 1 mine near Wharton, W.Va., as a result of sudden adverse geologic conditions in the primary conveyor belt and travel entries of the mine. The company determined the current and anticipated geologic conditions have caused continued mining operations to become impractical. Therefore, the company intends to permanently close the mine.

Cliffs to Acquire INR Energy PDF Print E-mail

Cliffs Natural Resources has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire all of the coal operations of privately owned INR Energy for $757 million. INR produces high-volatile metallurgical and thermal coal. Subject to customary conditions, including Hart-Scott-Rodino review, the transaction is expected to close by the beginning of September.

Cobalt Coal Re-opens Westchester Mine PDF Print E-mail

Cobalt Coal Corp. announced during late May it has begun coal production at its Westchester metallurgical coal mine, located in McDowell County, W.Va. The Westchester mine produces high quality, low-vol met coal. The Westchester mine operated from fourth quarter 2008 until second quarter 2009, when the global recession caused demand for met coal to drop dramatically. Cobalt received a new purchase order for coal in the first quarter of 2010 and has since been working to put the Westchester mine back into production.
