Cliffs Purchases Automated Plow System for the Pinnacle Mine PDF Print E-mail

During July, Bucyrus hosted an event in conjunction with Cliffs Natural Resources for the mining press and stock analysts at its facilities in Houston, Pa. Cliffs recently purchased a new fully automated Bucyrus GH 1600 plow system for the Pinnacle mine, located near Pineville, W.Va. This will be the first state-of-the-art plow system installed in the United States. The Pinnacle mine is the only longwall mine in the country that uses a plow instead of a shearing machine and the existing system needed to be replaced. This was a major achievement for both companies. They celebrated it with an afternoon soiree that included a preview of a portion of Pinnacle’s new equipment assembled and operating on the factory floor.

DSI Underground Systems has launched its TenCate longwall screens for shield recovery operations and roof and rib control. These products have been in development for the last seven years. Numerous successful shield recovery projects have been completed in Australia and the company believes the system is now ready for deployment in the U.S.

Matrix Design Group has completed the first installations of advanced communications and tracking systems that it claims are fully compliant with the requirements of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act). Matrix recently completed installation of its METS 2.1 wireless tracking and communication technology at all of the underground coal mines operated by  Alliance Resource Partners (ARLP).

ITT Corp has agreed to purchase privately held Godwin Pumps for $585 million. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2010, pending customary regulatory approvals. “This acquisition is another example of ITT’s strategy to expand our core businesses and build on our strong global positions in water, wastewater and industrial process,” said Gretchen McClain, president, ITT Fluid and Motion Control.
