Westmoreland, Keith AlessiExecutive Chairman Keith Alessi has reassumed the role of CEO of Westmoreland Coal Co. amid leadership changes pending its acquisition of Sherritt International’s Canadian assets. Alessi held the role for five years leading up to 2013. Richard Klingaman, meanwhile, reassumed his board chairman title. Klingaman was also chairman from 2009 to 2013, and has served as lead independent director since Q2 2013. Robert King has become president of U.S. operations. Alessi will become interim president for Canadian operations, too, directly overseeing the Canadian business transition.

Chairman Steven Leer will retire from Arch Coal’s board on April 24.

Chairman Steven Leer will retire from Arch Coal’s board on April 24. Leer served as the CEO from 1997 to 2012, and as president of Arch Mineral Corp., a predecessor company, from 1992 to 1997. He was elected chairman in 2006. Wesley Taylor will succeed Leer as chairman. Taylor joined Arch’s board in 2005 and was elected lead independent director in 2013. Prior to joining the board, Taylor served as president of TXU Generation for 13 years and president of Dallas Power & Light for three years during a 38-year tenure with TXU. Executive Vice President and COO Paul Lang has been elected to the company’s board of directors. Prior to assuming his current position, he served as the corporation’s executive vice president of operations and senior vice president of operations.

Danny L. Gray, executive vice president, Charah, has been named president of the board of directors of the American Coal Council (ACC). Charah assists utilities with all aspects of managing and recycling ash byproducts generated from the combustion of coal in the production of electricity.

Arch Coal announced that Charles G. Snavely has elected to retire as president of the company’s eastern U.S. operations, following a 35-year career in the coal industry. Upon joining Arch in 2011, Snavely helped lead the company’s integration of ICG. He will continue serving Arch in a consultancy role through 2014. Gary L. Bennett will succeed Snavely as president of eastern operations. Bennett will have responsibility for all aspects of Arch’s eastern subsidiary operations as well as the eastern engineering group. Bennett joined Arch as a senior engineer in 1990. He most recently served as vice president of operations support.

Bradley E. HansonSignal Peak Energy named Bradley E. Hanson president and CEO, effective January 1. Hanson is succeeding John DeMichiei, who is retiring from the company. Hanson has 36 years of mining experience and, since Q2 2010, has been the COO of Signal Peak.
