Alpha Natural Resources announced that CFO Frank Wood will retire effective February 28. Executive Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer Philip J. Cavatoni will assume the additional duties of the CFO. Wood joined Alpha Natural Resources as part of its merger with Foundation Coal in 2009. Currently serving as senior vice president and controller of a key Alpha subsidiary, Alan W. Jones Jr. will join Alpha’s management committee and be promoted to chief accounting officer and controller.

Jim Gooch Jr.The Kentucky Coal Association (KCA) selected Kentucky State Rep. Jim Gooch Jr. as its Coal Miner of the Year for 2014. KCA president Bill Bissett said that the annual award, announced October 24, was given to the House Natural Resources Committee leader for his position as a “proven leader who possesses a tremendous knowledge of Kentucky, its economy, and the direct connection between how we generate electricity and the economy of the Commonwealth.”

Raymond Shepherd Peabody Energy named Raymond V. Shepherd III vice president of federal government relations to advance Peabody’s public policy and regulatory interests on American energy and environmental matters. Previously, he served as partner and chairman of the Congressional Investigations Practice Group at Venable LLP. He also worked on Capitol Hill for 12 years as an advisor.
