Westmoreland's Jewett Hits Production Milestone

The Texas Westmoreland Coal Co.'s (TWCC) Jewett mine recently produced its 200 millionth ton of lignite. The second largest lignite mining operation in Texas, Jewett celebrated the occasion on July 30 with a barbeque lunch for 500 people, including employees and families, TWCC and NRG Texas Power corporate representatives, state and local government officials, contractors and vendors.

Cottage Grove Marks Safety Milestone

Peabody Energy's Cottage Grove operation in southern Illinois recently passed a significant safety mark, three years without a single reportable incident. The producer said the mine has operated without a lost work day since July 15, 2011, and during that time crews have produced more than 5 million tons of coal. The mine's year-to-date incidence rate of zero compares to a 3.42 incidence rate per 200,000 hours worked among U.S. mines, based on the latest data.
